In many instances the software creates XML files. One example is the XML created when generating ASIC Form 5602/5603.
If you put certain characters in the 5602/5603 fields (such as a payee name) and this field contains characters that don't easily translate to XML then you will see this error.
The likely cause of this issue is that one of the characters used in the data is not a valid XML character.
In most cases the software finds known characters that are invalid and replaces them with friendly characters.
When looking at the 5602/5603 output, in the first instance, check any text entry fields where unusual characters may have been entered, such as:
- Look at the Receipts and Payments and find any payees that have and apostrophe or % or some strange character.
- Memo fields in transactions
- the reasons for delay
- details of disposals other than for cash
If you have a large number of transactions in the report you may need to run it in small date range groups in order to narrow down the date of transaction causing the issue (and then the exact transaction).
Once the cause is known and updated you will need to rerun the Form 5602/5603.
Please report these characters to support@exalt.zendesk.com for a possible hot fix.
If you are unable to find the offending character, then support will need a copy of your data to identify the character.
