All you need to print cheques is:
1. A printer that takes a MICR toner cartridges. The toner prints magnetic ink on normal plain or pre-printed paper.
You may need to check the maximum bleed on the printer to ensure that it can print close to the edges in accordance with the bleed specifications.
If you need to customise the positioning and appearance of cheques then the instructions and available options are attached.
2. Registration (pre-printed cheque stock only)
If you print on your company's cheque stock, you may have to register with Australian Payment Clearing Association (www.apca.com.au). Usually, a printer who specialised in printing pre-printed cheque stock will do this for you.
Following your successful application, APCA issue successful applicants with a Printer ID which appears on your cheque stock.
If you are printing on plain paper you don't need to register.
3. Use the Insolvency software to print payments with the Print Cheque report formats.
The best result for printing cheques is to use a single cheque report format which suits all banks. This will allow you to print cheques for any bank account without thinking about the cheque format that you need for a bank. It's a one-size-fits-all solution.
The ACPA regulates the format of printed cheques. The specification for cheque production is attached. The MYOB cheque outputs adhere to this standard.
Generally, it is possible to have a single cheque report format where banks adhere to the ACPA standard cheque printing requirements. All banks accept cheques in the ACPA format.
What do you do if a bank raises an issue with a cheque format?
Usually, you will be able to standard print cheques and banks will process your cheques without issue. We have never had any cases where banks have returned cheques to the depositor.
It is reasonable rare, but, some banks may raise issues requiring their bank logo to appear on the on the cheque. This is not required by APCA but the bank may raise this as a requirement. You can usually explain that you are printing for multiple banks and you only have one printing format for all banks.
